Cold exposure boosts metabolism and longevity

What the science says

Cold exposure activates brown adipose tissue and transiently boosts metabolism, and some markers of metabolic health improve. However, there is no direct human longevity data. Animal studies show cold stress can extend lifespan in some models. The metabolic benefits are real but modest; the longevity claims are extrapolation.

Full analysis

## The Evidence **Brown fat activation**: Cold water immersion and cold air exposure activate brown adipose tissue (BAT), which burns calories generating heat (thermogenesis). A 2009 *NEJM* study confirmed BAT is metabolically active in adults and inversely correlated with BMI. **Metabolic markers**: Multiple studies show cold exposure improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammation, and increases norepinephrine by 200–300%. van der Lans et al. (*Journal of Clinical Investigation*, 2013) found 10 days of mild cold exposure increased BAT activity and improved insulin sensitivity. **What We Don't Have**: No human study has followed cold exposure practitioners for decades measuring lifespan. Animal models showing longevity benefits use chronic cold exposure that doesn't translate directly to cold showers. ## Practical Reality Cold showers or brief cold immersion (2–3 min, <15°C) appear safe for healthy individuals and have real acute metabolic effects. As a longevity intervention, the magnitude is probably modest compared to diet, exercise, and sleep. Worth doing if you enjoy it; the hype outpaces the evidence.
